I thought this was one of the most worthwhile things I did while in Vietnam. Peter’s advice on how to photograph the Vietnamese and he’s cultural insights were invaluable. Aa a result of the tour our I gained enough confidence to take some shots I was really happy with. Thanks Peter.
Pieter taught us the basics of camera use, composition, light and so forth. Two of us had photocamera’s, two had smart phones. Pieter showed us that you make great pictures with both! We got to see a part of Hoi An – Vietnam that the regular tourist may not see. We took great pictures during the workshop but we also benefited from the lessons learnt during the rest of our holiday in Vietnam.
I enjoyed my photo walk today with Pieter. I was looking for someone to show me tips and tricks for approaching and photographing people. I also wanted to see how locals live, so the morning walk was perfect for me. I was worried about the difficulty of having different levels of camera knowledge on the tour, as I’ve been photographing for quite a long time and was hoping the tour would prove useful for me. Pieter did a nice job of balancing other peoples needs teaching them more basic camera settings and additionally providing more in-depth insights for me. Most importantly, I walked away a better photographer as a result of the tour.
Pieter gave an excellent tour and the presented a relaxed but informative talk on how to use my camera. Even though I did not have SLR camera he gave me great tips on how to get the best out of it. The tour group was small so he was able to give one to one advice and review your shots.
An added bonus is after the tour you can access the client section of the website to refresh your memory on key points.
During the tour he also provided information on the local culture which was very helpful. My only regret is I should went on the tour at the start of the holiday.
Saw Pieters reviews on trip advisor and compared that with the many negative ‘no show’ reviews from the other company so that’s why I chose him. I arrived 10min early and he was already there! Pieter was very attentive to our needs ( there were 2 clients ) and dealt with each issue very professionally and knowledgeably. I personally gained the confidence and skills required to take portraits of strangers thanks to his tips and techniques ( so much more practical than reading about it in a book ) Still have a way to go with this but by the end of the tour I was comfortable engaging victims, I mean subjects… and getting great results. Lots of top advice on settings, composure etc etc. I thought I knew a lot of this struff already but I gained so much from this experience that I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Pieter to all levels of photographer from novice to seasoned intermediate like me. I’m sure I will progress hugely from the course and the advice. Don’t be put off if you only have a point and shoot. The lady with me on this tour had one of these and she had a great experience too. Ps. None of my photos are edited in any way – I don’t have my laptop with me but probably won’t change them anyway. We’ll see when they are on the big screen!
Being a professional photographer myself, I recommend Pieter Janssen to anyone visiting Vietnam and want to witness an unexplored side of beautiful streets in Hoi An. The tour started with a cup of hot coffee and he started with the basics of camera equipments and gave other photography instructions that were really helpful. Soon after, we walked into the streets of Hoi An, which was the most special part of his tours. He took us to places where a normal tourist wouldn’t even go. He was very friendly and calm all throughout the walk. He is highly patient as he would always let me finish the picture I am trying to take no matter how much time it takes. His commendable local knowledge helped me a lot in my trip to Vietnam. He taught us different words (For ex. ‘Dep’ meaning Beautiful in English) in local language that made local residents more responsive towards us. I believe I used the word Dep more than 20 times after that, meaning, I got 20 awesome portraits in my trip to Vietnam :). I would specially like to mention one incident where one of the participants from our photo tour wasn’t feeling well, so we took a break on her request, he was kind enough to extend the tour for the minutes we lost in that break which I believe was truly professional. He is an amazing person without whom I would have not been able to discover unseen side of Hoi An streets. The Photo walk with Pieter Janssen is an extraordinary experience for anyone visiting Hoi An. Thanks to him for the amazing pictures I got!
Pieter is a very patient photography instructor with excellent local knowledge. We did three trips with him – the morning, afternoon and evenings ones. Each trip started with a how to use your camera talk which was perfect for beginners. He knows exactly where to go off the beaten track to get good photos and directs you as to how to take them. He knows lots of the locals and which ones are willing to have their photo taken. We learned lots about street photography and how to approach people. The night session was really useful for learning how to take photos in low light using a tripod. We were very pleased with the photos we took and learned lots about the settings on our cameras too. We highly recommend these courses, not just for photographers, but those people who want to see the real Hoi An.
I did two photo tours with Pieter: one was a photo walk through Hoi An itself and the second was an excursion to a neighboring island to observe ship builders and farmers at work. Pieter’s familiarity with the local community encouraged me to go for shots I wouldn’t have attempted to take otherwise. I came back with a portfolio of portraits and street scenes that represent my favorite images from my Vietnam trip. I have posted them here:
My first tour was solo and the second was with another photographer, but on both Pieter gave me the room and time to get the shots I wanted and I never felt like I was being hustled along. Pieter clearly has experience working with different levels of photographers and I think his instruction is most beneficial to those who value introductory information while his choice of locations is beneficial to all levels. For small tours or 1:1 walks, I recommend that Pieter request and the photographer send a gallery of representative work or desired images so expectations can be set.
For me, I had a great time and would definitely approach Pieter again if I return to the area. There should be more tours like his around the world.
First of all, before booking this tour be aware that Pieter is not going to take you to the most “photogenic” spots in Hoi An that adorn every postcard. Thats not the focus of this tour. Its more to teach you about how to use your camera settings and how to stroll around the backstreets looking for more unusual and unique photo opportunities, with lots of tips for how to compose shots and how to approach people in such a way that they might be more willing to be photographed. Pieter has lived in Vietnam a number of years and so knows a lot about the culture and how to apply that knowledge to getting a good shot. The tips he provides are very useful and can be applied in other locations and situations in Vietnam or indeed in any country. Hes a very good communicator and explains concepts and techniques very clearly. Recommended.
I was only visiting Hoi An for a short space of time and wanted to make the most of it. My interest is people, cultures and photography. I discovered Hoi An Photo Walks/Tours online.
What better way to serve my interests all in one go by attending one of Pieters’ tours.
Pieter is very experienced and knowledgeable in the people, culture and photography. He ensured I had a good understanding on the many functions of my camera and practical tips of how I could improve the images.
The group was small so ample opportunities to learn as you go.
I spent the whole day on two tours, the morning tour was a walk in the backstreets and alleys of Hoi An away from the scores of tourists. This was focussed on portrait images. I found the people very friendly and was nervously allowed to approach them very closely using some useful words and tips given by Pieter.
The second tour in the afternoon was on one of the surrounding islands only a short ferry trip away; this focussed on farming, landscapes and boatyards also some low light photography.
Pieter is very patient and explains things in simple terms without the jargon.
A fantastic experience and learning for me that I will remember and use wherever I go. Very pleased with my results too from the images captured.
I recommend this to keen photographers no matter what camera you use, there is always something to learn to improve your skills.
Took part in the morning tour with Pieter today. Started at 7am and finished up between 10.30 and 11am. I learnt more about how to use my camera in that time than I have in 3 years of owning it!! Pieter took us ( 5 on the tour) through the side alleys of Hoi An only a few blocks from the heart of the tourist area, but we may as well have been miles away. He took time instructing each of us in how to set up our photos, look around to see what we want to include and exclude, shifting our position or the position of our subject matter to get the best shot. Instructing us on how to get photos of the local people – how to approach them and interact. I am travelling solo so this was great that I could join with other solo travellers to take part in this tour. Be aware – there must be at least 3 people booked for the tour to operate but I was able to put my name down and Pieter emailed me to confirm there was sufficient numbers to go ahead a couple of days in advance.. Thank you so much Pieter for a great morning – and for the cold drinks on a very hot morning..!! Thoroughly recommend Pieter’s tours.
